The Interiorscape Sector Group of Landscape Ontario has identified a need for educational programs to develop and maintain high workmanship standards for onsite technicians. In 2009, it will host a series of breakfast workshops that will present hands-on introductory sessions. This format is designed to minimize impact to employers by allowing technicians to join the program and still return to work in time to perform regular duties and immediately turn their new lessons into action.
Introduction to Pruning Workshop
The first in the series of interiorscape-focused seminars will be on plant pruning. Industry experts will explain and demonstrate the basics of proper pruning techniques in this hands-on workshop.
Attendees will learn about:
• The importance of pruning in maintaining good plant health
• Proper techniques to remove diseased and non-productive portions from a plant
• Basic plant and branch structure
• Shaping plants for maximum aesthetic effect
• Appropriate pruning tools, care and maintenance
Who should attend:
• Interior and exterior plant maintenance technicians
• Interior and exterior landscapers who install plants
• Garden centre personnel
• Indoor plant retailers
This is also a great opportunity to gain renewal points for your CHT designation.
Speaker Profiles
Instructors for the pruning workshop are Phil Van Alstyne and Fred Prescod. Phil is a Certified Horticultural Technician with the Interiors specialty and was the main pruner of large specimen plants with Beach McLeod for more than 18 years.
