| Train New Staff in WHMIS Each year every employer is required to provide WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) training to their workers. The training course outlines the legislated requirements of this law. In the Ottawa area the next course is on Thurs., May 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at the office of the Ottawa District Hockey Association (ODHA), 1247 Kilborn Place, Suite D 300, Ottawa. | CHT test days announced Dates for certification testing dates have been announced. Sign up now for the full test or the re-test. Order your manual so that you can practice in the workplace before test day. Test days are as follows: Milton on July 16 and 17, Ottawa, Kemptville College, on Aug. 13 and 14, and re-test day in Milton on September 24 and 25. To register and order manuals, click here. | Evaluate your environmental practices Green industry members can now take part in a short self-assessment survey to see how their environmental practices measure up. Created by Landscape Ontario’s Environmental Stewardship Committee, the online survey was launched to green industry associations across Canada on Earth Day, April 22. An online scorecard measures the impact on air quality, waste management, water stewardship, greening offices and use of horticultural best practices within areas of practice (landscape design, maintenance, retail, snow and ice management, irrigation, etc.) The survey is quick to use; it will take approximately 10 minutes to fill out. After taking the survey, your comments are welcomed, and will be used to improve future versions of the green industry environmental scorecard. | Promote tax credit to your customers Landscape Ontario has created a pamphlet to help members communicate details of the Home Renovation Tax Credit (HRTC) to homeowners. Just in time for Canada Blooms, thousands of the brochures were handed out to consumers during the show. The response was tremendous as the public grabbed up the information, many saying they had no idea landscaping qualified for the tax credit. | Interiorscape group plans breakfast workshops The interiorscape sector group of Landscape Ontario is offering a series of hands-on introductory workshops for technicians involved in the care and maintenance of interior landscape plants. Start off your day with a sponsored breakfast, followed by an interactive workshop session led by qualified instructors. These workshops will introduce participants to topics required for the Certified Horticultural Technician [(CHT) – Interior] exam. The first workshop, Introduction to Pruning is scheduled for Wed., May 13, at LO’s head office in Milton from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. Dates and location are undetermined for two other planned workshops, Introduction to Plant Identification and Introduction to Watering and Subirrigation.
