| Chapter meeting – Jan. 21 Join the Chapter for the annual Landscape Ontario roundup, with LO executive director Tony DiGiovanni and LO president Bob Adams. It will be held at the New Strathcona Paper Centre, 16 McPherson Drive, Napanee, Ont., on Jan. 21, 2009, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Learn about the direction of LO for 2009. The second part of the meeting focuses on Managing Financial Statements. Learn the A, B, and C’s of managing financial statements and how to make them work for you. This presentation will help give you the starting tools for staying in business and knowing your costs. Lunch is provided. | Add drystone walls to your company’s offerings A drystone wall construction workshop is scheduled for Tues., Feb. 3 and Wed., Feb. 4 (two-day course) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Kemptville College. Students will be trained in the traditional art of dry stone walling. This will include two days of hands-on experience about foundation preparation, batter, bonding, through stones, hearting, cheek ends and vertical coping. Participants will need to bring steel-toe boots, work gloves and safety glasses. There is a maximum 10 participants. The workshop will take place at Kemptville College Campus, University of Guelph. | Register now for Masonry in the Landscape Landscapers often use masonry in construction and maintenance projects. There is a two-day seminar set for Thurs., Mar. 5 and Fri., Mar. 6 (two-day course), from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Instructor Mark Bradley will teach the dos and don’ts of good masonry design and application. Attendees must bring proper personal protection equipment, work boots, gloves, etc., since this a hands-on seminar. The course will take place at Connon Nurseries CBV, 956A Old Hwy #2, Trenton (phone # for directions). | SCIP in Ottawa Register by Jan. 27th for the Safe Communities Incentive Program (SCIP), scheduled each Tues., Feb. 3, 10, 17, 24 and Mar. 10th, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at TerraPro Corporation, 145 Loretta Ave. North, Ottawa. This SCIP program promotes safety in the workplace and can help small businesses reduce their WSIB insurance premiums. | First Aid courses are a must On Tues., Feb. 3 and Wed., Feb. 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. a Standard First Aid course, with Level ‘A’ CPR, will be taught in Napanee. This two-day practical course meets WSIB requirements and prepares participants to administer first aid for common landscape injuries. Participants must bring a blanket. You will receive a St. John Ambulance certificate at a later date. Please note, some branches charge administration fees for re-issuing lost or misplaced certificates. To arrange a seminar date specifically for your company, call your local branch of St. John Ambulance. | Trent to host job fair – Jan. 28 Trent University is hosting a Summer Job Fair on Wed., Jan. 28. Landscape Ontario members may staff a table to inform students about summer work in their industry and collect names and resumes of students interested in working in crews. The program promotes health and safety in the workplace, accomplished through mentoring, pooling resources and sharing best practices between member firms, their sponsor and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).
